Junior Nora Feddersen scored the game-winning goal in sudden death overtime Tuesday afternoon at Maxwell Family Field to give the California field hockey team a 1-0 victory past No. 18 Lafayette in an NCAA Play-In game. The Golden Bears (15-6) automatically advance to the NCAA Regionals for the second consecutive year as the Leopards finish the season at 19-3.

"If you can get the ball into (Feddersen's) hands, she usually makes a good decision," said Cal head coach Shellie Onstead.

Cal dominated the offensive attack throughout the entire game, collecting 12 penalty corners, six in the first half alone, to Lafayette's five. One was all that was needed for the Bears, as Feddersen dribbled around Lafayette's defenders after the penalty corner was brought in to fire her sixth game-winning goal of the year at 76:22.

"This was a team that hadn't lost in 19 straight games, so they had a lot of belief that they couldn't lose," said Onstead. "We had a hard time with their corner defense. We tried everything to beat it."

Cal is now 5-1 in overtime games. Feddersen has scored the golden goal in every win.

"When we went into overtime I relaxed a little bit," noted Onstead. "I think it plays to our game. It plays to our stick skills and passing skills."

The Leopards' best scoring opportunity came in the 56th minute, when the nation's leading goal scorer, Megan Monahan went one-on-one with Cal goalkeeper Kelly Knapp. Monahan launched the ball to the right side of the box, as Knapp extended her body and was able to deflect the ball off her leg to keep the game scoreless.

"Knapp's save was the game-winner," said Onstead. "It was a turning point for us. After, our kids were like, okay, we're fine."

Knapp logged six saves in the game, including two in overtime, to notch her seventh shutout of the year.

California now waits to find out where they will be going to play in the NCAA Regionals. The NCAA announces the pairings at 5 p.m. this evening. The 16-team tournament will be played at four different host schools, beginning Saturday, Nov. 16th through Sunday, Nov. 17th.
