The California Field Hockey team suffered a 8-0 loss to No. 2 Wake Forest in the first round of the NCAA Championships Saturday afternoon at Kentner Stadium in Winston-Salem, N.C. to finish its 2002 season. The heartbreaker lands Cal a 15-7 overall record for the year, snapping its seven-game win streak, as the Demon Deacons (17-2) earn their 16th consecutive victory, advancing to the second round of NCAAs.

The cold and rainy weather favored host Wake Forest this afternoon, as they jumped out to an early lead, scoring three goals in the first nine minutes of play. Maeke Boreel connected with a pass from Kelly Doton at 3:27 to give the Deacs a lead they would not relinquish.

Doton responded two and a half minutes later with her first of three goals for the day off one of six first half penalty corners for the Deacons, brought in by Heather Aughinbaugh and stopped by Make Boreel.

Emily Ruth fired a shot past Cal goalkeeper Kelly Knapp in one of Wake Forestˇ?s 15 first half shots, assisted by Aughinbaugh, at 8:24 for the third goal of the game.

ˇ?After the first few goals, which were really attributed to nerves that gave up those early corners, I thought we started playing pretty even,ˇ? said Cal head coach Shellie Onstead. ˇ?We were playing how Iˇ?d hope we would start.ˇ?

Bear defense kept the Deacsˇ? attack scoreless for 14 minutes before Wake Forest collected off of another penalty corner. Midfielder Ariel Meyers flicked the ball to the center-top of the cage, assisted by Doton, for the Deacons' final goal of the half.

ˇ?I wasnˇ?t that bothered at 4-0,ˇ? noted Onstead. ˇ?Then the tide kept turning and we didnˇ?t seem to be able get it going at that point.ˇ?

Doton opened up the second stanza firing to Knappˇ?s left at 40:39, a shot that was first blocked by Knappˇ?s legs and eventually fell to the back of the box.

Wake Forest continued to test Calˇ?s corner defense, as Doton scored her eighth goal of the year, assisted by Aughinbaugh and Boreel to increase the lead to 6-0.

Claire Lawhon scored her first two goals of the season, both unassisted, at 63:50 and 64:36 to cap the Deaconsˇ? lead to 8-0. The first squeezed by Knapp two yards out and the second she fired 10-yards out.

California was outshot by Wake Forest, 0 to 24. The Deacons earned 24 penalty corners to the Bearsˇ? 0.

ˇ?Itˇ?s disappointing to go down that hard,ˇ? said Onstead.

Knapp recorded six saves in the effort, receiving defensive help from Calˇ?s back line, including junior Erin Booth, senior Stephanie Lyons, and freshmen Alana Smith and Jenna Long.

ˇ?Iˇ?m happy to have gotten back (to NCAAs),ˇ? said Onstead. ˇ?I would have liked to have had a better showing. I thought we were more prepared to give them a game, but it wasnˇ?t meant to be today.ˇ?

California finishes its 2002 season 15-7 after making its seventh NCAA playoff appearance in six seniors final collegiate game. Wake Forest will face the winner of No. 10 Duke vs. No. 12 James Madison, Sunday at 2 p.m. at Kentner Stadium.
