UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. -- Richmond junior attacker
Katie Dolan (Towson, Md.) scored four times and added two assists while
sophomore attacker Polly Purcell (Ellicott City, Md.) notched three goals
and contributed two assists to lead the Spiders to a 14-6 victory over
Cal-Berkeley on Sunday afternoon at President's Field. The Spiders (6-2,
1-0 Atlantic 10), winners of five straight, are off to their best start in
school history.
The Spiders jumped out to an 11-0 lead 21 minutes into the first
stanza with Dolan and Purcell each accounting for three goals in the
opening run. Senior Carrie Aitken (Paxton, Mass.) struck first for
Richmond, rolling around the cage and firing into the upper right of the
net to take a 1-0 UR lead. Less than a minute later, Dolan drove to the
cage and drew a foul. On the free position, she easily located the back of
the net to put the Spiders up 2-0. Richmond would erupt for 12 goals in a
nine-minute span starting at the 8:56 mark when Dolan again drove the
cage. The speedy junior found a waiting Purcell on the right side of the
cage for the 3-0 advantage. Midfielders Jen Cielewich (Severna Park, Md.),
Kristy Gallagher (Chatsworth, N.J.) and Libby Berlacher (Villanova, Pa.)
would round out the first half scoring. The Bears down by 11 would net
their first score of the afternoon with seven minutes remaining in the
half, a Kelley Queisser free position goal. Sophomore Emily Edwards added
two more scores in the final four minutes, including a goal in the final
:30, to pull the Bears to within eight at the break (11-3).
The Spiders continued their scoring surge in the second thirty
minutes. Dolan was fouled and placed on the 8-meter, converting her third
free position on the afternoon to put the Spiders up 12-3. After again
winning the ensuing draw, Libby Berlacher added her second score of the
day less than 17 seconds later. Cal would net the next three scores, as a
Colleen O'Mara free position goal cut the deficit to seven, 13-6 with less
than six minutes remaining. That would as close as they could get.
Richmond dominated possession accounting for the first ten draw controls
of the game and a season-high 18 on the day.
