Sophomore attacker Emily Edwards notched four goals and an assist in a losing effort Friday evening as the UMBC Retrievers (2-4) defeated Cal (7-3, 4-1 in MPLL), 11-10, in the Bears' third match of their four game East Coast road trip.
UMBC held a 6-4 halftime advantage as junior midfielder Lauren Traber scored two goals and added two assists in the initial stanza. In the second half, the Retrievers would increase their lead to four at 11-7 as senior midfielder Jamie Gerhart notched her second goal of the game at 9:50. From there, UMBC would hold off a strong Bears' charge that included three straight goals to secure their first win against a non-conference opponent this season.
Offensively, Edwards led the Bears with four goals and an assist. Seniors Halsey Monger and Laura Kado added two goals apiece while sophomore midfielders Julianne Wu and Carley Preble each tallied a goal. In goal, Bears' keeper Eden Coelho stopped 15 Retriever shots while UMBC goalkeeper Courtney Stringer made seven saves. Overall, UMBC outshot Cal, 36-26. In a well-balanced attack, the Retrievers featured eight different scorers with Traber leading the way with two goals and two assists.
Cal will finish off its road trip on Saturday, March 30 at 12:30 p.m. (PST), as they square off against George Washington in Washington, D.C.
