BERKELEY, Calif. -
The fourth-ranked University of California women's water polo team beat up on the visiting Anteaters of UC Irvine, dropping the No. 19 team in the country by a score of 13-5 a Spieker Aquatics Complex in Berkeley today.
The Bears' offensive attack overwhelmed UCI goalie Jennifer Moon and the Anteater defense. Cal used a balanced attack, which saw ten different players post at least one score, with freshman sensation Jodie Needles leading the way with a hat-trick. Lauren Dennis continued to be solid in goal, saving five shots before giving way to Christina Quintanilla in the fourth period. Quintanilla, the true freshman from Davis, notched four saves in her brief appearance.
Cal got off to a quick start, scoring four goals in each of the first two quarters to extend the halftime lead to six, with the scoreboard showing an 8-2 count. Needles scored all of her goals in the first half, and set the tone for the win, which was based on an aggressive offense. The Bears set themselves on cruise control in the second half, allowing head coach Peter Asch to get a look at players further down the bench before Cal emerged with the eight goal win.
The Bears complete their four-match homestand tomorrow at Spieker when they take on No. 12 San Diego State. The opening sprint is set for high noon.
