BERKELEY, Calif. -
The University of California women's water polo team won their fourth consecutive home match, blowing first-year squad Cal State Northridge out of the pool in a 14-2 victory over the Matadors. With the win, which counts in Mountain Pacific Sports Federation standings, the Bears improve to 12-6 (6-2 MPSF), while CSUN falls to 3-14 (0-8).
Cal, featuring its usual balanced offense, saw 10 different players score in the blowout, including a pair of hat tricks by team captain Brenna Fleener and Tia Lachowicz, both of whom bested the entire offensive production by the Matadors. Several familiar names scored before coach Peter Asch emptied his bench in the second half, including freshman sensation Jodie Needles and Ericka Lorenz.
Both the first and second period saw Cal score five goals, while CSUN posted one, as the match stood at 10-2 at halftime. Cal goalie Lauren Dennis blocked three shots in the period as several Matador shots went wide of the net.
Dennis gave way to Christina Quintanilla at the beginning of the second half. The true freshman Quintanilla saved six shots while pitching a second-half shutout. While the third period was scoreless, the Bears warmed up again in the fourth, scoring four unanswered goals, each by a different scorer.
Barber led CSUN, scoring both the team's points. Moody saved seven shots in the losing effort.
Cal completes its trio of games this week, taking on Long Beach State tomorrow at Spieker Aquatics Complex in Berkeley. The opening sprint is set for noon.
