The California field hockey team (1-1) took its first loss of the season, 1-0, Tuesday afternoon at Varsity Field Turf in Stanford, CA against Ohio State (2-1) in overtime.
Bear goalkeeper Kelly Knapp was the defensive star for Cal, recording eight saves off of the Buckeyes' 15 shots during regulation time. The Golden Bears were only able to get off four shots, including two by junior Nora Feddersen before the second half ended tied, 0-0.
Ohio State's Mariana Solarzano scored the game-winning goal 3:56 into overtime, her second of the season. The goal came off a penalty corner, assisted by Stacey Todd and Vanessa Immordino. Todd brought the ball in to Immordino, who set up Solarzano to slap the ball into the left corner of the box.
Ohio State drew 10 penalty corners to Cal's 2 during the 73:56 minutes of play. Both keepers, Knapp and Ohio State's Lara Koole played the entire game as Koole recorded the shutout with one save.
Cal goes on a three game road trip back east, playing their first NorPac conference game against St. Louis, Thursday Sept. 5th (3 p.m. CT) at Anheuser-Busch Center in Fenton, MO.
