Box Score

Today's 3 o'clock field hockey match at Anheuser-Busch Center pitted NorPac foes Cal and St. Louis in an evenly played show of athleticism. The Golden Bears' tenacious play gave them the 2-0 shutout over the Billikens.

Cal came out strong with key ball possession and a tough defensive line, as did Saint Louis. The first ten minutes was a display of good field communication and passing by both squads. At 10:42 into the first half, sophomore forward Maggie Grimes netted an unassisted goal after the Bears moved swiftly through the Billiken defense.

The Bears were awarded four penalty corners with the Billikens receiving three in the first half with SLU taking four shots on goal to Cal's two attempts.

The second half was a tug-of-war over ball possession and turf control. The Bears took three shots and Saint Louis took six.

Just six minutes into the half, Cal's Stephanie Lyons, a senior midfielder, scored the second goal of the game. Lyons was unassisted on a powerful stroke to the net, her first of the season.

Cal's offensive line was just too deep and experienced for the Billiken defensive squad this afternoon. In the waning minutes of the game, Cal's junior back Erin Booth made an incredible body save after sophomore keeper Kelly Knapp was hit with a swarm of Billiken shots and rebounds. Knapp was prone on the turf after making a save and Booth fully extended herself behind Knapp to block a Saint Louis score.

Sophomore forward Ellen Rapp led the Bills with six shots on goal and was followed by sophomore back Lisa Ferrise with four shots. Senior goalie Leslie Kearns made a good showing between the pipes. Saint Louis' defensive line showed great improvement and was stubborn in allowing the Bears to infiltrate their end of the field.

Penalty corners in the second half favored Saint Louis with six to one for the Bears.

Cal will face NorPac rival Southwest Missouri State, tomorrow Sept. 6th at the Anheuser-Busch Center in Fenton, MO at 2 pm.
