The California field hockey team (3-1, 1-0 in NorPac) shut out Southwest Missouri (1-1) Friday afternoon at the Anheuser-Busch Center, 1-0.

Cal got on the board early in the first half with a goal by senior Michelle Wald 8:50 into the game. Wald's goal was all that the Bears needed to pick up the win for the day, their third of the season.

Both teams battled to find scoring opportunities during the remainder of the game, as Cal took 16 shots to SMS's 13. Junior Nora Feddersen added five shots and Wald took four.

Bear Goalkeeper Kelly Knapp collected 10 saves for the day to keep SMS scoreless throughout the 70 minutes of play, her third shutout of the season. SMS goalkeeper Tiffany Sands had eight saves including two on Cal penalty strokes to give her team a chance.

SMS had 11 penalty to corners to just two for California.

Cal returns to action Sunday, September 8 when the Bears face Indiana in Bloomington, IN.
