SEATTLE ?- Washington extended its home winning streak to
13-straight games with a 74-54 victory over California in front
of 5,453 fans at Bank of America Arena, Saturday.
Senior Emily Autrey led the Huskies (19-5, 11-4) with 17 points and five
rebounds off the bench. Autrey scored 12 of her points in the second half,
shooting 5-for-6 from the field. Junior All-America candidate Giuliana
Mendiola chipped in 15 points, four rebounds and four assists, while senior
Kellie Dalan scored 13 points and added six boards.
Cal (8-15, 4-10) also countered with three players in double-figure scoring
including 17 from forward Leigh Gregory, 13 from guard Nihan Anaz and 10
from center Timea Ivanyi.
The Huskies held Cal to just 54 points, the second-lowest point total by UW
opponent this season. UW allowed just 48 points to St. Bonaventure, on Nov.
29, at the Seattle Times Classic. The Golden Bears shot just 35.7 percent
from the field (20-56) and failed to make a three-point field goal on five
attempts.
Washington shot 46.7 percent from the field (28-60), to go along with its
second-lowest three-point shooting percentage mark (20 percent, 3-15) this
season.
Cal opened the game with a brief 4-2 advantage at 17:35, but the Huskies
responded with a 9-0 run to retake a lead they would not relinquish. In
fact, Washington outscored the Bears 21-9 through the first 10:45 of the
game and lead by as many 14 points with 1:35 to play in the half. The Bears
ended the first half on a 10-2 run to cut the Husky advantage to seven
points (37-30) heading into the intermission.
In the second half, Cal cut the Washington lead to as little as five points
at the 17:29 mark, until the Huskies once again took control with 12-4 run.
UW's largest lead of the game was 24 points with 1:47 remaining in the game.
