Athens, Ohio -
The California women's lacrosse team (9-3 2-0, MPLL) broke a 7-7 tie with three straight goals and goalkeeper Eden Coehlo saved a free position shot with 13 seconds left as the Golden Bears defeated Ohio, 12-11, in a non-conference lacrosse match Friday afternoon, April 11, at Pruitt Field.
The Bobcats' Lindsey Hart, the nation's fourth-leading scorer, tallied six goals to lead all Ohio attackers, while Carley Preble was one of eight of Golden Bears to find the net with three strikes.
Ohio jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first 3:44 when Hart struck for two unassisted goals. Cal scrathced the scoreboard at the 9:38 mark when junior Julianne Wu answered unassisted. Hart's third goal of the game - on a free position shot - gave the Bobcats a 3-1 lead, but junior Colleen O'Mara returned the deficit to one, 3-2, with a goal at 17:01.
Ohio's Lynz Keys tallied back-to-back goals less than three minutes apart to push the lead to 5-2 with 6:33 remaining in the first half, but Cal responded with three straight goals to tie the score at intermission. O'Mara scored her second at 25:15 followed 55 seconds later by a goal from Preble. Junior attacker Emily Edwards hit the equalizer with 18 seconds left in the period.
The Bobcats broke the tie 52 second into the second stanza on a free position attempt by Becky Oxman, but Edwards knotted the score at six 24 seconds later. The Golden Bears took their first lead of the contest at the 32:35 mark on Preble's second goal of the afternoon. Another free position goal by Oxman evened the game at seven before Cal found the back of the net three times in less than five minutes for a 10-7 advantage. Senior co-captain Jessie Liu , sophomore Molly Brady and freshman Kally Perkins were the Golden Bear scorers.
Keys completed her hat trick and made the score 10-8 with just under 11 minutes to play before the teams started trading goals. Hart cut the gap to one, 10-9, on an unassisted goal at the 53:15 mark, but freshman Leanne Zilioli answered 41 seconds later. Hart scored unanswered with 5:08 left, but Preble tallied her third of the game on a free position shot 1:01 later.
The final score came off the stick of Hart with 1:06 left, setting up a furious Bobcat rally. Ohio gained control of the ensuing draw and set up several chances in the closing seconds. With just 13 ticks left, a Cal yellow card resulted in a game-tying free position chance, but Coelho stopped Oxman's point blank shot to ensure the victory.
Coelho made eight saves in the Golden Bear net, while Jen Cassidy stopped seven shots in the Bobcat net.
Cal continues its stint in the Buckeye state as the Bears face off against No. 11 Ohio State Sunday, April 13 at 11:00 a.m. (PST) in Columbus, Ohio.
