Chestnut Hill, Mass. -
The California women's lacrosse team (8-3 2-0, MPLL) relinquished a 6-3 halftime lead and lost its second consecutive game as the Boston College Eagles edged the Bears, 9-8, on Sunday, April 6, at Alumni Stadium in Boston. Sophomore Molly Brady recorded her fifth hat trick of the season in the losing effort.
The Eagles opened up the 1-0 lead as Courtney Legath found Carley St. Lucia for the score and the game's first point at the 2:10 mark. The Boston College lead would not last long, however, as Brady tallied her first score of the afternoon to tie the game at the 9:52 mark. Freshman Leanne Zilioli followed that with her first goal of the day to give the Bears the 2-1 lead with 19:41 left to play in the first half. Legath and St. Lucia connected once again at the 12:00 minute mark, giving Boston College its second lead of the game. The Bears responded, however, recording four unanswered goals in the next 13 minutes to take the commanding 6-2 lead. The Eagles' Maggie O'Neill ended the scoring drought as she found the back of the net with just 39 ticks on the clock, closing the Cal advantage to 6-3 heading into the break.
When leading at the half this year, the Bears were a perfect 5-0. Well that all changed this afternoon when the Eagles lit up the scoreboard with six second half goals while limiting Cal to only two. Susie Breaznell opened up the flood gates just 1:01 into the second stanza, starting a three-goal flurry that knotted the score at 6-6 with 21:34 remaining to play. Refusing to give into the Boston College offensive pressure, Cal responded with two consecutive scores of their own as junior attacker Emily Edwards converted her second goal of the day and Brady her third to give Cal the 8-6 advantage with 16:30 on the clock. The lead remained 8-6 for the next 10 minutes until the Eagles hit the first of three successive scores to close out the final stretch and claim the 9-8 come-from-behind victory.
Cal Goalkeeper Eden Coelho was strong between the pipes; recording 13 saves while facing 29 Boston College shots. Cal fell to 8-3 on the year with the loss while Boston College improved to 5-2.
Cal returns to action Friday, April 11 at 1:00 p.m. (PST) vs. Ohio University in Athens, Ohio.
