The No. 16 ranked Cal women's volleyball team (8-0) won its fifth consecutive tournament, defeating Cal Poly (7-3), 3-0 (30-16, 30-22, 30-14) Saturday evening at Haas Pavilion. The Bears were led by tournament MVP Mia Jerkov, who paced Cal with 16 kills and 10 digs. The Bears also received outstanding play from junior Gabrielle Abernathy, who joined Jerkov on the all-tournament team and had 10 kills and eight digs.
Cal had a stellar performance from its middle hitters as well. Junior Camille Leffall (nine kills, no errors, 11 attempts) and sophomore Alicia Powers (nine kills, one error, 10 attempts) both hit .800, while freshman setter Samantha Carter had 41 assists and joined Jerkov and Abernathy as a member of the all-tournament team.
The Bears have now won 17 straight regular season tournament matches, carrying over from the 2002 season. Cal's Jerkov has also been tournament MVP in all five of the Bears' tournament titles. It is also the second year in a row the Bears have started Pac-10 play undefeated, winning nine straight matches to begin the 2002 season.
Cal cruised in game one against the Mustangs, winning 30-16 and holding Cal Poly to a -.189 hitting percentage. Game two was a battle as the Bears came back from a 17-12 deficit. Finally a service ace by Powers gave Cal its first lead at 20-19, and the Bears went on to win 30-22, sealed on block assists by Leffall and Jerkov for the final point. Cal easily took game three, hitting .528 as a team, compared to .028 for the Mustangs.
In the 5 p.m. match Saturday, Nevada (5-6) defeated New Hampshire (2-7), 30-27, 31-29, 30-26.
The Bears will next begin conference play, Thursday, Sept. 18 at Oregon and Friday, Sept. 19 at Oregon State. Both matches will start at 7 p.m.
