STANFORD, CA - No. 3 California tied No. 7 Stanford, 2-2, on Friday in both teams' Pac-10 Conference opener, before a crowd of 1,116 at Stanford's Maloney Field. The Golden Bears remain undefeated, moving to 7-0-2, while Stanford is now 5-1-4.

Cal junior midfielder Nick Hatzke, the team's leading scorer with four goals, opened scoring in the 16th minute, when he found the back of the net from 20 yards out on a free kick. Cal would go into the half with a 2-0 cushion when Stanford scored an own goal at 39:04 off of a Cal corner kick.

Stanford used a strong surge late in the second half to salvage the tie. Senior Matt Janusz converted a penalty kick in the 72nd minute after Stanford sophomore Bret Shimizu was fouled inside the box. Stanford evened the score in the waning minutes of the half, when senior Darren Fernandez headed in a cross re-directed by Cal keeper Eric Kronberg.

Cal was unable to pull out the win in the two overtime periods, although the Bears outshot the Cardinal 7-1 in overtime. Cal's Kronberg finished the evening with 4 saves, while Stanford's Robby Fulton ended the night with 6.

The Bears continue Pac-10 play when they face Washington in Seattle on Oct. 8 at 7 p.m.
