Five different Bears scored goals on Saturday as the No. 14 California field hockey team defeated NorPac West Division foe Pacific, 5-1, at Brookside Field.
The victory by the Bears was their eighth in a row, tying a consecutive wins mark set by the 2001 Cal squad. The last loss the Bears suffered this season was a 1-0, overtime defeat at Southwest Missouri State on Sept. 8.
Sophomore forward Valentina Godfrid gave Cal a 1-0 lead, seven minutes, eight seconds into the match, stickhandling into the striking circle and launching a shot past Tigers goalkeeper Kim Myers.
Pacific tied the game on a goal by forward Vianney Campos with two minutes remaining before halftime.
Forward Maggie Grimes netted the game-winner for the Bears at 44:36. Godfrid was credited with the assist. Twelve-and-a-half minutes later, midfielder Samantha Gallop converted the Bears first penalty stroke of the season for a 3-1 Cal lead.
Forward Alexandra Harkins (unassisted goal) and midfielder Jamie Nance (penalty stroke) scored their first goals of the season in the final three minutes of play to provide the margin of victory.
Cal goalkeeper Kelly Knapp recorded nine saves in the win.
The Bears will attempt to set a new program mark for consecutive victories on Saturday as they host No. 12 Boston College (6-3). Match time at Maxwell Family Field is 1 p.m.
