Box Score
FRESNO, CA -
After winning the first two games of the series, the California baseball team lost big to host Fresno State, 18-1, in the series finale Sunday at Beiden Field. The Golden Bears, who had won three games in a row, fell to 7-5, while the Bulldogs improved to 4-7. Cal had owned a four-game winning streak over Fresno State, winning 16-4 Friday and 2-0 on Adam Gold's one-hitter Saturday.
Following an hour and 20 minute rain delay, the Bulldog offense scored three runs in the first inning off Cal starter Kyle Crist who was lifted with one out in the first inning. Crist (1-2) surrendered three runs on five hits.
Cal trimmed the lead to 3-1 on a RBI double by freshman designated hitter Brennan Boesch in the second inning off Fresno State starter Brandon Miller. Making his first career starter, Miller (1-0) scattered a run on six hits and two walks while striking out four over five innings to earn his first collegiate victory.
Boesch's RBI was as close as the Bears would get, though, as the Bulldogs went on to score two runs in the second, two runs in the third, five runs in the fifth, five runs in the seventh and a run in the eighth off of seven Cal pitchers. The Bears' best pitching performance came from senior right-hander Blake Read, who threw two-thirds of an inning with one hit, no runs, no walks and two strikeouts.
Sophomore shortstop Allen Craig (2-for-4), freshman center fielder Chris Errecart (2-for-4) and junior first baseman James Holder (2-for-4, double) each tallied two hits for Cal.
The Bears next host to San Francisco, Tuesday, Feb. 24 at 2 p.m. at Evans Diamond. Cal then hosts Bay Area rival Stanford in a three-game non-conference series beginning Friday, Feb. 27 at 2 p.m. at Evans Diamond.
