BERKELEY, Calif. - The Cal women's lacrosse team scored the first three goals of the day and never looked backed, leading wire to wire in a 17-14 victory over the University of Denver Pioneers at Memorial Stadium on Sunday. The victory pulls the Golden Bears' record even at 1-1 on the season. The Bears' 17 goals, ties their second highest total since the 2000 season.

Freshman Elizabeth Reifsnyder got the Bears off on the right foot with her first goal of the season less than four minutes into the game. Less than a minute later, Molly Brady score the first of her seven goals, giving the Bears a 2-0 advantage.

The Bears and Pioneers ran up and down the field for the next five and a half minutes, but were not able to score, missing several key opportunities. But with 20:43 showing on the clock, senior Carlie Hooff placed the ball in the back of the net. Hooff's goal was quickly followed by Brady's second goal. After that the Bears were out in front for good, scoring five more goals in the half, to lead by a 9-3 margin at the half.

The young Pioneers, who sport 12 freshmen on their roster, put up a valiant effort in the second half, outscoring the Bear 11-8. But the Bears were able to muster enough offense, thanks to five second-half goals by Brady, to keep Denver at bay.

The seven goals by Brady ties a Cal school record for most scores in a game. Brady matched a four-year old record set originally by Sarah Wheatley on April 5, 2000. Brady's five goals in one half was also a career high for the junior out of Madison, Conn.

Reifsnyder ended the game with three goals in just her second collegiate contest. Fellow first-year player Laura Cavallo, picked up three points (2 goals, 1 assist), while the always steady Julianne Wu chipped in with a goal and two assists.

Colleen O'Mara continued to wow fans with her field vision and passing skills, accumulating a well-rounded four points (2 goals, 2 assists).

The Pioneers were paced by Patience Baldwin, who tallied 5 points (4 goals, 1 assist).

The Bears move on to face the University of Notre Dame at Memorial Stadium on Friday, Feb. 27.
