BERKELEY, CA -
The University of California baseball team lost to San Francisco, 7-4, Tuesday in a non-conference game at Evans Diamond. The Golden Bears fell to 7-6 on the year, while the Dons improved to 3-6.
Both teams scored a run in the first inning. USF's Chris Genung had an RBI single up the middle against Cal freshman starter Brandon Morrow (0-1, 3.0 innings, four hits, three runs, two earned runs, no walks, three strikeouts), and sophomore shortstop Allen Craig hit a solo home run off of the Dons' freshman starter Ryan Muller.
The Bears let the game slip away when Morrow gave up a two-run homer to Armand Gaerlan in the third inning and reliever Travis Talbott gave up three runs on five hits in the fourth inning. Cal gave up an additional run in the seventh inning on a solo home run by Genung off of Matt Brown.
The Bears did rally for three runs in the bottom of the seventh to get within 7-4. Craig and senior designated hitter David Weiner led off the inning with singles. After a wild pitch, Craig scored on a sacrifice fly to center by freshman center fielder Chris Errecart, senior catcher Chris Grossman had a RBI single and junior left fielder Justin Nelson followed with an RBI triple. Unfortunately for Cal, USF reliever Patrick McGuigan was able to get Brian Horwitz to ground out and James Holder to strikeout to end the inning.
Weiner finished the day 3-for-5, and Craig and Nelson had two hits apiece. Besides the hot hitting of Gaerlan and Genung, Scott Cousins was 3-for-4 for the Dons.
The Bears will next host No. 1 ranked Stanford in a three-game non-conference series, beginning Friday, Feb. 27 at 2 p.m. at Evans Diamond.
