The California baseball team was swept by No. 1 Stanford, 6-2, Sunday at Evans Diamond. The Golden Bears fell to 7-9 on the year, while the top-ranked Cardinal improved to 13-2. Stanford won each of the three games of the non-conference series - 12-9 Friday, 10-3 Saturday and 6-2 Sunday.
The Cardinal were led by the pitching of freshman left-hander Blake Holler, who improved his record to 2-0, throwing 7.0 innings with five hits, one run, three walks and four strikeouts. The hitting star for Stanford was sophomore first baseman John Mayberry, Jr., who finished the day 3-for-5 with a double and three RBI. Mayberry, Jr. had an RBI double in the first inning, an RBI single up the middle in the fifth inning and a RBI double in the seventh inning. The Cardinal's other runs came on a throwing error by Cal second baseman David Nicholson in the first inning, a run-scoring double play ball hit by Sam Fuld in the second inning and a solo home run by Donny Lucy in the fourth inning.
The losing pitcher for the Bears was junior starter Kyle Crist (1-3), who pitched 4.0 innings with nine hits, four runs, three earned runs, no walks and three strikeouts. Top hitters for Cal, who only had six hits on the day, were senior center fielder David Weiner and freshmen outfielder/first baseman Chris Errecart. Weiner put the Bears on the scoreboard with a solo home run in the first inning and Errecart was 2-for-4. Freshman Garrett Bussiere was 1-for-3 with a double and had a fielder's choice RBI for Cal in the ninth inning, scoring Errecart.
Junior Jonny Dyer earned his first save of the season for Stanford in the bottom of the ninth, getting the final two outs after coming in with the bases loaded and getting Bussiere to ground into a fielder's choice and striking out pinch hitter Justin Nelson.
The Bears will next travel to San Jose State, Tuesday, Mar. 2 for a 7 p.m. game Municipal Stadium, before a three-game non-conference series versus Saint Mary's, beginning Friday, Mar. 5 at 2 p.m. at Evans Diamond.
