Berkeley -
In an evenly played game, in which there were six ties, the California Golden Bears were able to slip by a tenacious George Washington team, 12-11. The win brings the Bears' record to 3-4 on the year and ends a mini two-game losing streak. Cal moves on to take on Le Moyne, Sunday, in Syracuse, N.Y.
The Bears scored three of the first four goals of the game to lead 3-1 13 minutes into the contest. But GW struck back, scoring three of four goals themselves between the 10:32 and 8:01 marks to tie the match at 4-4. The two schools traded six goals to go into the half tied at 7-7.
The first-half heroine for the Bears was freshman Laura Cavallo, who picked up a hat trick, accounting for three of the Bears' seven goals. For GW, the catalyst was Laura Hostetler, who picked up four points in the first 30 minutes.
Cal and George Washington exchanged goals the entire second half, setting up a suspenseful final nine minutes. Tied at 10 apiece, Hostetler scored with 9:11 showing on the clock to give GW its first lead of the game, 11-10.
The next eight minutes became a defensive battle between the two squads, as both teams dug in. But in the end, it was Cal co-captain Colleen O'Mara registering her seventh goal of the season to tie the game at 11-11 with 51 seconds remaining.
Facing what seemed to be sure overtime, Cal senior Julianne Wu magically came up with a loose ball and with a flick of the wrist scored the game-winning goal with 0:21 showing on the Memorial Stadium clock.
