Austin, Texas -
No. 16 California shot a final-round best 286 (-2) at the Morris Williams Intercollegiate today, to move up to sole possession of fifth place. The Bears started the day in seventh place, but on a day when scoring in the 290s was common at the par-72, 6,906-yard Austin Country Club, Cal moved up the leader board to its sixth Top 5 finish in eight events.
No. 19 Brigham Young won the tournament at 6-under-par, despite shooting a 292 (+4) on the final day, while Andrew Dahl of Arkansas won the individual crown at 10-under-par.
Leading the California charge was senior Peter Tomasulo. Tomasulo's streak of three straight Top 5 finishes was broken, but he carded a final round 69 (-3) to move into a tie for 12th at 2-under. His 69 was the second-best round of the day, only behind Texas' Jeff Bell, who shot 68 (-4).
Jesse Ruda and Michael Wilson both rebounded from opening-day struggles to shoot 71 (-1). Ruda finished tied for the 33rd at 5-over-par and Wilson finished tied for 57th at 7-over-par. Both Ruda and Wilson had their best finishes of the spring.
Jeff Hood was the second-highest California finisher, shooting a final round 75 (+3) to finish tied for 30th at 4-over-par.
Scott Carlyle, who led the team through two rounds, shot a 77 (+5) to fall into a tie for 33rd place at 5-over.
The Western Intercollegiate, hosted by San Jose State, is the next event on the schedule for the Bears. The tournament will take place next Monday and Tuesday, March 22-23.
