The California baseball team utilized eight pitchers who limited San Francisco to one run on seven hits as the Golden Bears defeated the Dons, 2-1, Tuesday afternoon at Benedetti Diamond. Cal improved to 16-17 on the season, while USF fell to13-15. It was the Dons' first loss at Benedetti Diamond this season in six games.
The Bears scored their runs on a solo home run by junior third baseman David Nicholson off of USF starter Brian Borgmann (1-1, 7.0 innings, seven hits, two runs, one walk, four strikeouts) in the fourth inning. Cal then got its insurance run in the fifth inning when freshman second baseman Brett Munster hit a RBI single up the middle, scoring senior right fielder Brian Horwitz, who had started off the inning with a single.
The winning pitcher for the Bears was pitcher number three, junior right-hander Kyle Crist (3-4), who threw the third inning with no hits, no runs, no walks and two strikeouts. San Francisco got its lone run in the eighth inning off of Cal reliever Jesse Ingram (2.0 innings, three hits, one run, no walks, four strikeouts) when Chris Genung hit a RBI single up the middle. Ingram was able to strikeout Joe Jacobitz with runners on first and second to get out of the inning.
Senior Matt Brown (1.0 inning, no hits, no runs, one strikeout) pitched the ninth inning to earn his second save of the season and 16th saves of his career, placing him third on the Cal all-time career save list. On the day, Bear pitchers struck out 11 Don batters. Horwitz and senior catcher Chris Grossman (2-for-4, double) finished with two hits apiece for Cal.
The Bears will next host Washington in a three-game Pac-10 series, beginning Friday, Apr. 2 at 2 p.m. at Evans Diamond.
