Cal Blanks Creighton, 3-0, in Season Opener

LINCOLN, Neb. -
California opened the 2004 season with a 3-0 shutout over Creighton Friday on the first day of the Nebraska adidas Invitational at Abbott Soccer Complex. The Golden Bears have now won five straight season openers and eight of their last nine.
Junior forward Liz Eisenberg gave Cal a 1-0 lead in the sixth minute when she converted a shot from 12-yards out. Junior forward Dania Cabello was credited with the assist. Eisenberg tallied a goal and an assist last Friday in the Bears' 3-0 exhibition win vs. UC Davis.
Junior reserve midfielder Lindsay Clute tallied her first career goal in the 44th minute, with freshman Caroline Lea and sophomore Katie Ratican earning assists.
Forward Stephanie Wieger, who was one of five freshmen in Cal's starting unit, added an insurance goal in the 71st minute.
Cal junior goalkeeper Ashley Sulprizio, who spent her freshman campaign enrolled at Nebraska, posted two saves to secure the shutout. The Bears outshot the Blue Jays (0-1 record), 15-6.
The young Bears face one of their toughest tests of the season on Sunday when they battle No. 1 North Carolina at 9 a.m. PT (11 a.m. CT) on the second day of the tournament.
