No. 15 Bears Improve to 8-2 with Win against Drexel

BERKELEY - With incoming Athletic Director Sandy Barbour on hand to witness her first California athletic event, the Golden Bears field hockey team defeated Drexel on Thursday at Maxwell Family Field, 3-1.

Forward Teela Crosthwaite gave the Bears a 1-0 lead 11 minutes into the match, taking a feed from forward Valentina Godfrid across the scoring circle to score an open-net goal.

Godfrid pushed the Cal lead to 2-0, 30 seconds before halftime, slapping a shot past Drexel goalkeeper Katie Dougherty into the upper left corner of the net. Godfrid leads the Bears in scoring with 22 points (eight goals, six assists).

The Bears' final goal of the afternoon came at 44:32 with midfielder Alana Smith tallying her fourth score of the season. Midfielder Chilly Banuelos was credited with her sixth assist of the year on the penalty corner.

The Dragons' lone goal came from backfielder Rachel Bloemker on a penalty corner at 63:27.

Cal goalkeeper Kelly Knapp made 10 saves.

The Bears (8-2, 1-1 NorPac) return to play on Saturday against Pacific. The NorPac conference match begins at Maxwell Family Field at 1 p.m.
