Junior midfielder Chilly Banuelos scored twice and sophomore forward Valentina Godfrid added her team-leading 11th goal of the season as the No. 15 California field hockey team won its sixth consecutive match, 3-0, against No. 23 Virginia Commonwealth on Friday at Maxwell Family Field.
The Bears' victory snapped a six-game VCU winning streak. The Rams, who had outscored their opponents 28-3 during the streak, were held scoreless for the first time this season in losing their first match since Aug. 28.
Godfrid tallied the game-winner at 15 minutes, 35 seconds to give the Bears a 1-0 lead. Forward Amber Madsen was credited with her third assist of the season.
Two-and-a-half minutes after the restart, Banuelos netted her first score of the day on a penalty corner. Forward Maggie Grimes and midfielder Samantha Gallop recorded the assists.
Banuelos scored her second goal of the afternoon, an unassisted goal from a rebounded goalkeeper save, at 60:03.
Kelly Knapp made three saves in the cage for Cal and recorded her third shutout of the season.
The Bears outshot the Rams 21-7 on the afternoon.
Cal (10-2, 2-1 NorPac West) resumes conference action Saturday against Stanford. Match time at the Cardinal's Varsity Field Hockey Turf is slated for 1 p.m.
