BERKELEY - University of Louisville midfielder Jessica Javelet scored one minute, three seconds into the first overtime period to help the Cardinals defeat the California field hockey team, 2-1, on Saturday at Maxwell Family Field. The victory gave Louisville (1-2) its first win of the season while the Golden Bears took their first loss (3-1). Cal forward Valentina Godfrid scored the Bears' lone goal of the match at 2:18. The Rosario, Argentina native took a loose ball in the scoring circle and slid it past Cardinals goalkeeper Jenna Halulko. Javelet, who has scored all three of Louisville's goals this season, knotted the game 1-1 at 17:41. The Bears played shorthanded the final five minutes of regulation as Godfrid was shown a yellow card at 65:34. Earlier in the match she acquired a green card. Javelet's game-winner came off of a shot by Louisville backfielder Kimberly Hughes. Hughes' shot was outside the scoring arc, but rode off of Javelet's stick and past Cal goalkeeper Kelly Knapp for the victory. The Bears return to action on Sunday against Boston University. Match time at Maxwell Family Field is slated for 1 p.m.
