BERKELEY - The California field hockey team (9-6, 5-1 NorPac) scored six goals in the first period, helping them to an 8-0 victory over Longwood (4-9, 1-2 NorPac), Sunday afternoon in Berkeley.
Junior forward Valentina Godfrid scored the Bears' first goal, six minutes into the game. Godfrid scored off a shot in front of the net. Close to two minutes after Godfrid's first goal, senior midfielder Chilly Banuelos scored her first-of-two goals off a penalty stroke.
Sophomore forward Jenny Crane, also scored in the first period. Jenny's drove past her defender giving her an open look at the net. Jenny's sister, freshman forward Missy Crane, also tapped in a goal before halftime; Godfrid was credited with the assist.
Closing off the first period, senior backfielder Jessica Bird collected her first goal of the day, off a Banuelos pass. Freshman forward Katie Cummings' goal from the left post, gave Cal a 6-0 advantage at half.
Cal did not score again until the final 12 minutes of the game, when Banuelos scored off a penalty corner; freshman forward Andrea Lo was credited with the assist. At the end of regulation, Bird scored off another penalty corner, Godfrid had the assist on the final goal.
The Bears return to action next Saturday, Oct. 22 against No. 11 Michigan Wolverines in Berkeley. Game time at Maxwell Family Field is set for 12:00 p.m. (PDT).
