BERKELEY, Calif. - After a scoreless first half, No. 9 California lost to No. 4 UCLA, 2-0, Friday afternoon at Edwards Stadium. The Golden Bears fell to 11-3-2 overall and 4-1-1 in the Pac-10, while the Bruins improved to 15-1-1 and gained sole possession of first place in the conference at 5-0-1.Rain fell periodically in the second half.

Entering the game, Cal ranked No. 2 in the nation in goals-against average at 0.309, and UCLA was fifth at 0.365. Today's game snapped a streak of six straight Bears' shutouts.

Cal outshot UCLA, 5-2, in the first half and 8-7 overall in the game. In the final 11 minutes of the first half, Bears reserve forwards Bri Wiles and Valerie Barnes each forced UCLA goalkeeper Valerie Barnes to post saves on their shot attempts.

UCLA went ahead, 1-0, in the 56th minute when a Cal defender headed a long cross from the Bruins' Mary Castalanelli into the Bears' net. Initially, offsides was called on UCLA's Iris Mora, but the whistle was waved off after a discussion between the referee and the linesman. The goal stood.

"You never want to see that happen," said Cal head coach Kevin Boyd. "But, everyone that's ever been a defender at any level has had an own goal happen to them. It happens occasionally. I'd rather it now than in the playoffs. I did not think we played well in the second half. It wasn't a matter of match-ups. We just didn't play well. We didn't possess the ball. That's a big part of our game. We didn't play with confidence. We got the ball and looked nervous."

Cal, which has scored several goals on corner kicks over the last few games, earned its first corner kick of today's game with under nine minutes left in the contest. Junior forward Katie Ratican delivered a quality service off the corner, but Henderson secured the save on junior midfielder Nadia Al-Lami's header. That was arguably Cal's best chance to score in the second half.

The Bears were forced to push more players forward in the final 10 minutes of the game in an attempt to tie the game. In the 84th minute, UCLA midfielder Danesha Adams capitalized on the Bears defense being out of position with her team-best 14th goal of the season.

Cal faces USC Sunday, Oct. 30, at 1 p.m. in its final regular-season home game. The Bears will honor their eight seniors prior to the match.
