The Cal men's golf team started the 2005 spring season placing 14th Tuesday at the PING-Arizona Intercollegiate, played at the Arizona National Golf Club in Sabino Springs, Ariz., Jan. 31-Feb. 1. The Golden Bears, the defending 2004 national champions, shot rounds of 301, 289 and 300 to conclude the tournament at 890 (+38). New Mexico captured the tournament with a score of 840 (289, 280, 271, -12).
Cal's highest individual finisher was senior Jeff Hood, who finished tied for 10th with a one-under 212 (68, 71, 73). Hood had been tied for second after his first round 68 on Monday, but the second round on Monday was suspended due to darkness. Other finishers for the Bears included sophomore Brandon Beck, who tied for 61st at 227 (76, 72, 79, +14), freshman Michael Jensen tied for 64th with a 228 (76, 79, 73, +15), junior Fredrik Svanberg was 69th at 230 (81, 72, 77, +17) and redshirt freshman Kyle Dowden was tied for 76th (84, 74, 77, +22).
Arizona State's Alejandro Canizares (65, 66, 71, -11) was the tournaments' individual champion with a scores of 202.
The Bears will next compete at the Cleveland Golf Invitational, held at the North Ranch Country Club in Westlake Village, Calif., Feb. 28-Mar. 1.
