The No. 6-ranked University of California women's water polo (3-2) team finished 2-2 and placed fifth at the 2005 Stanford Invitational, held this past weekend at the Avery Aquatic Center on the Stanford campus. On Saturday, the Golden Bears fell to No. 10 Indiana, 8-5, and No. 2-ranked and defending National Champion USC, 12-4. Cal rebounded on Sunday, upending No. 7 Hawaii, 8-6, and No. 11 San Jose State, 13-9.
Senior and two-time All-American Jodie Needles led the Bears in the victory over the Spartans with a team-high four goals, while juniors Allison Gold, Lauren McGee and Holly Farlin added two goals apiece. Junior goalie Alex Feune de Colombi and freshman goalie Heather Stuart had five and three saves, respectively.
In Cal's other Sunday victory sophomore Elsie Windes notched a team-high two goals against Hawaii. Needles, juniors Brittani Llorente, Katie Card, Shaina Feldman; and freshman Molly Hayes and Vanessa Lindsey also scored goals against the Rainbow Wahines, and Feune de Colombi had four saves.
No. 1-ranked UCLA ended up winning the 2005 Stanford Invitational with an 8-6 victory over USC. Stanford defeated Indiana in the third-place match, 11-4. The Bears will next travel to Loyola Marymount, Friday, Feb. 18 (time TBA), and then visit USC, Saturday, Feb. 19 at 12 p.m. at McDonalds Swim Stadium.
