The No. 7-ranked University of California women's water polo (5-4) team finished 1-1 during the first day of the 2005 Daktronics Gaucho Invitational, held this weekend at UC Santa Barbara. On Friday, the Golden Bears defeated No. 14 Cal State Northridge, 12-4, but fell to No. 9-ranked Hawaii, 9-6.
In the victory against CS Northridge, Cal was led by freshman Vanessa Lindsey's three goals, and two goals apiece by senior Jodie Needles, junior Allison Gold and sophomore Elsie Windes. Breana Allison, Shaina Feldman and Annie Wight also tallied goals for the Bears, while freshman goalie Heather Stuart notched five saves.
In Cal's lost to Hawaii, Gold was the Bears' top scorer with three goals, Windes added two goals and junior Holly Farlin also had a score. Junior goalie Alex Feune de Colombi finished with eight saves. Earlier this season, Cal had defeated the Wahines, 8-6, at the Stanford Invitational Feb. 13.
The Bears will next play No. 19-ranked Princeton Saturday at 11:30 a.m. at the RecCenter Pool on the UCSB campus.
