Final Stats

CATHEDRAL CITY, Calif. - The No. 1 California softball team suffered its first loss of the season Saturday to No. 16 Texas A&M, 5-2, but rebounded to post a 7-3 victory against No. 5 Tennessee at the Palm Springs Classic.

In the opener, Texas A&M starter Megan Gibson hit a two-run first inning homer and struck out five to lead the Aggies past Cal. Gibson held Cal scoreless until the fifth inning, when centerfielder Kaleo Eldredge single home third baseman Vicky Galindo to cut the Texas A&M lead to 2-1.

The Aggies, however, pushed their lead to 4-1 an inning later. Galindo, who went 3-for-4 in the game, doubled home first baseman Julie Meyer in the sixth to cut the defiecit to 4-2, but it was all the offense the Bears could muster.

Cal starter Kelly Anderson struck out four in falling to 4-1.

In the nightcap, Eldredge and designated player Jeana Gevas both hit two-run homers and leftfielder Lindsay James had a two-run double as Cal downed the No. 5 Volunteers.

The Bears scored all the runs they would need in the first three innings, staking starter Kristina Thorson to a 7-0 lead. Thorson struck out seven to improve to 5-0.

The Bears wrap up action at the Palm Springs Classic Sunday at 1 p.m. against Loyola Marymount (1-3).
