No. 2 California Sweeps First Day of NIST

SUNNYVALE, Calif. -
The No. 2 California softball team defeated Santa Clara, 4-1, and Princeton, 3-0, on Friday to move into the winner's bracket of the National Invitational Tournament at Twin Creeks Sports Park.
Cal (20-1) will play Sacramento State at 12 p.m. Saturday. The winner advances to a 4 p.m. date with the Iowa-San Jose State victor. The loser plays at 2 p.m.
In the opener, Cal defeated SCU for the third time this season as junior Emily Friedman hit her first home run as a Bear. Junior left fielder Lindsay James added three hits and senior shortstop Chelsea Spencer had two RBIs. Junior Kristina Thorson picked up the victory to move to 9-0 on the year.
James added three hits, including a double, and two RBIs in the nightcap as senior starter Kelly Anderson improved to 8-1 in the circle.
