Cavallo Scores Hat Trick in Loss to Northwestern

EVANSTON, Ill. - Laura Cavallo scored a hat trick in California's 18-6 loss to second-ranked Northwestern on Sunday afternoon. The Golden Bears fall to 4-3 (1-0 MPSF), while the Wildcats improve to 7-0.

Northwestern scored the game's first 10 goals before Cal got on the scoreboard thanks to Danni Zuralow's first goal of the season in her first game of the season. The Bears freshman scored off a free position shot at 28:37. The Wildcats led, 11-1, at halftime.

Cavallo scored back-to-back goals early in the second half, as Cal trailed 12-3, but the Bears got no closer. The sophomore midfielder added her third, an unassisted strike at 45:00, sophomore teammate Liz Reifsnyder scored an unassisted goal at 46:20 and senior teammate Molly Brady scored an unassisted goal with 28 seconds left in the game to close out Cal's scoring. Brady, who set up Cavallo's second goal, recorded Cal's only assist of the day.

Through the first seven games of the season, Cavallo leads Cal in goals (15), assists (9) and points (24).

The Bears next play Notre Dame (1-4) at 4:30 p.m. ET on Tuesday at Moose Krause Stadium in South Bend, Ind.
