California's Liz Reifsnyder scored the gamewinning goal and freshman Brittany Aungier had one goal and two assists as California beat host Denver, 7-6, on Saturday afternoon at the Peter Barton Lacrosse Stadium. The Golden Bears evened their record at 1-1 (1-0 MPSF) with their first conference game of the season. The Pioneers fell to 1-4 (1-1MPSF).
Reifsnyder scored the deciding goal with 8:14 left.
Sophomore Hilary Lynch made 11 saves for the Bears. Steph Schneider made 13 saves for Denver.
Denver got on the scoreboard first, as Crystal Jack scored her lone goal of the game at the 4:41 mark of the first half. But Cal got three straight goals from Jocelyn Paul, Willa Lee and Reifsnyder to take a 3-1 lead with 7:18 left in the half. Sophomore Laura Cavallo added a goal to give Cal a 4-2 lead at halftime.
Cal extended its lead to 6-3 on goals by Aungier and senior Molly Brady early in the second half. After Reifsnyder's second goal, the Bears held on, as the Pioneers tacked on late goals by Steph Greenlees and Kate Broderick to cut the margin to one.
Cal returns home on Tuesday, March 8, when it hosts La Salle at 3:30 p.m. in the Bears' home opener at Memorial Stadium.
