The No. 2 California softball team scored two runs in the top of the seventh inning to outlast No. 7 Alabama, 3-2, and defeated Mount St. Mary's, 12-0, on Saturday at the Malihini Kipa Aloha Tournament.
With the victories, the Bears earned the No. 1 seed for Sunday's bracket round and will play a yet-to-be-determined opponent at 3 p.m. PST. A potential tournament championship game looms at 7 p.m.
In the nightcap against Alabama (21-3), pinch hitter Emily Friedman's fielder's choice scored shortstop Chelsea Spencer and a bunt from right fielder Kristin Bayless plated first baseman Julie Meyer to give Cal a 3-1 lead heading into the bottom of the seventh.
The Crimson Tide loaded the bases with one out and a sacrifice fly from Alabama center fielder Jackie Wilkins scored pinch hitter Jordan Praytor to cut the Cal lead to 3-2. However, starter Kristina Thorson (7-0) induced a groundout from Tide catcher Ashley Courtney to preserve the Cal advantage and help the Bears improve to 16-1.
Cal took a 1-0 lead against Alabama in the second as first baseman Julie Meyer, who reached first on a wild pitch after a swinging third strike, scored on another wild pitch unleashed from Alabama starter Stephanie VanBrackle (9-2).
In the opener, Cal catcher Haley Woods was 4-for-4 with five RBIs, a double and a homer as the Bears banged out 17 hits in defeating the Mountaineers (1-4).
Cal, which got hits from 11 different players and two RBIs apiece from center fielder Kaleo Eldredge and Friedman, scored all of its runs in the final three innings.
Senior Kelly Anderson (6-1) picked up the victory in relief of starter Sarah Adams.
