BERKELEY, Calif. -
California's Jodie Needles scored with 35 seconds remaining in the first period breaking a 1-1 tie and putting the Golden Bears ahead for the remainder of the game. Cal continued its rout of ASU ending the game with a 10-2 victory at Spieker Aquatics Complex in Berkeley. The Sun Devil's scored their first goal with 55 seconds remaining in the first period, but Cal never relinquished the lead. ASU drops to 4-6 overall and 0-1 in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation, while the Bears improved to 9-4 and 1-1 in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation.
The Bears scored first on Katie Card's goal with 1:59 remaining in the first period, but the Sun Devils responded with a goal by Ashley Bower with 55 seconds remaining in the first period. Jodie Needles took the lead, 2-1, for Cal with 35 seconds remaining in the first period.
Molly Hayes scored the first goal of the second period with 5:31 remaining in the first half and Breana Allison's goal with 2:40 remaining in the first half gave Cal a 4-1 halftime lead.
Marnie O'Donnell scored the first goal of the half with 1:56 remaining in the third period. With 45 seconds remaining in the third period Allison Gold gave the Bears a 6-1 lead, but the Sun Devil's Katy Lowler responded less than 30 seconds later with ASU's final goal of the game. The Bears entered the fourth period with a 6-2 lead.
Cal scored four unanswered goals in the fourth period, Breana Allison (6:27), Katie Card (5:35), Elsie Windes (3:23) and Vanessa Lindsey (0:25).
The Sun Devils were led by goals from Bower and Lowler, while the Bears were lead by two goals from Allison and Card and one goal from Gold, Hayes, Lindsey, Needles, O'Donnell, and Windes. Alex Feune de Columbi made seven saves in net for Cal, while Caylinn Wallace made eleven saves for ASU.
The Bears will next face No. 11-ranked San Diego State, Sunday, March, 6 at 12 p.m. at Spieker Aquatics Complex. Cal defeated San Diego State at last years MPSF Tournament.
