No. 2 California Sweeps Doubleheader in Hawaii

HONOLULU, Hawaii - Powered by catcher Haley Woods in the opener and Kristina Thorson in the nightcap, the No. 2 California softball team defeated Delaware State, 7-1, and host Hawai'i, 2-0, on Friday at the Malihini Kipa Aloha Tournament.

Woods went 3-for-4 with a home run and three RBIs to lead the Bears past Delaware State (6-6). Cal jumped on the board with two runs in the top of the first as left fielder Lindsay James and Woods scored on bases loaded walks.

Woods led off the fifth with her fourth homer of the season, a solo shot to left field and Spencer added her second run of the game later in the inning on a throwing error by Delaware right fielder Ashley Fisher.

Woods added a two-run double in the fifth as Cal scored three more runs to finish off the Hornets.

Sarah Adams improved to 3-0, despite pitching just one and two-thirds innings. Kelly Anderson tossed the remainder of the game, striking out a season-high 11.

Against Hawai'i (8-7), Thorson improved to 6-0, striking out six and scattering four hits. Cal took a 1-0 lead in the second as first baseman Julie Meyer drove home Spencer, who had doubled earlier in the inning

In the fifth, center fielder Kaleo Eldredge singled home Jessica Vernaglia - pinch running for Jeana Gevas - to provide the margin of victory for Cal.

The Bears (14-1) return to action Saturday against Mount St. Mary's (1 p.m. PST) and No. 7 Alabama (5 p.m. on day No. 3 of the Malihini Kipa Aloha Tournament.
