California's Molly Hayes scored the game-winning goal with 19 seconds remaining in the third overtime period, giving the No. 6-ranked Golden Bears a 10-9 victory over No. 11 San Diego State at Spieker Aquatics Complex in Berkeley.
The Aztecs came back from an 8-4 deficit midway though the fourth period to tie the game at the end of regulation, but Cal was able to finish off the Aztecs in three overtime periods.
San Diego State drops to 6-7 overall and 1-3 in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation, while the Bears improve to 10-4 overall and 2-1 in MPSF play.
Monica DeRosier scored first, off a 6-5 advantage giving the Aztecs a 1-0 lead 44 seconds into the game. The Bears scored two goals in a span of 26 seconds to take the lead, Jodie Needles (1:52) and Elsie Windes (1:26). San Diego State tied the game at the end of the first period with a goal by Rachel Serna with 11 seconds remaining in the first period.
California's Allison Gold scored a goal with 4:30 remaining in the first half, but Elana Cervantes scored for San Diego State with 3:14 remaining in the first half, tying the game up at 3-3. Windes and Needles scored two goals late in the second half, giving Cal a 5-3 advantage at halftime.
Serna scored for the Aztecs with 5:32 remaining in the third period. Windes scored her third goal of the game with 25 seconds remaining in the third period to bring the Bear lead back to two goals.
Annie Wight and Gold scored goals at 6:15 and 5:23 respectively bringing Cal's lead to 8-4, but the Bears allowed the Aztecs to score four unanswered goals to finish out regulation. Serna scored at 3:57 followed up by two consecutive goals by Cervantes at 1:58 and 41 seconds, bringing the score to 8-7. Becca Ur scored the final goal of regulation as time expired, bringing the score to 8-8.
Serna scored a goal for the Aztecs with 48 seconds remaining in the first overtime period. Katie Card tied the score at 9-9 with 1:04 remaining in the second overtime period. Hayes scored the game-winning goal for the Bears with 19 seconds remaining in the sudden death overtime period.
The Bears were led by three goals from Windes, two goals from Needles and Gold and one goal from Card, Hayes and Wight. The Aztecs were led by four goals from Serna, three goals from Cervantes and one goal from Uri and DeRosier.
Heather Stuart made eight saves in the net for California, while Sarah Kilgore made eight saves in the net for San Diego State.
The Bears will next visit No. 19 Cal State Northridge, Friday, March, 18 at Campus Pool.
