Final Stats
SACRAMENTO -
Junior Kristina Thorson tied a season-high with 12 strikeouts in game no. 2 and senior Kelly Anderson struck out eight in the opener as the No. 3 California softball team swept Sacramento State in a doubleheader, 3-1 and 5-0, at Shea Stadium on Wednesday.
Thorson struck out two batters in each of the first six innings and scattered four hits in improving to 16-4. The junior received all the support she would need in the first inning on catcher Haley Woods' team-leading 13th home run of the season, a two-run shot to center field that scored Kaleo Eldredge.
The Bears (37-5) added a run in the second on a bases loaded walk to Eldredge that plated shortstop Chelsea Spencer. Runs from Eldredge and second baseman Jessica Pamanian in the fifth ran Cal's advantage to 5-0.
Three different Hornet pitchers combined to one-hit the Bears through the first six innings of game No. 1 but runs by Pamanian and Erika Racklin in the top of the seventh put the game away for Cal.
Cal went up 1-0 in the first off of Sacramento State starter Brianne Ferguson (11-9). Third baseman Vicky Galindo tripled to lead off the game for the Bears and scored when Eldredge reached base on an error by Hornet second baseman Jessica Rojo.
Anderson (20-1) allowed just two Hornet hits until the seventh inning, when Sacramento State pushed its lone run across on an RBI-triple from center fielder Lindy Winkler that scored left fielder Leslie Mayhorn. Anderson retired 11 straight at one point and didn't face a batter over the minimum through four innings.
Cal, 4-2 in the Pac-10, resumes conference action Friday at Oregon (4 p.m.) before traveling to No. 10 Oregon State for games on Saturday and Sunday (both 1 p.m.).
