Final Stats
BERKELEY -
No. 7 Oregon State received back-to-back RBI doubles from catcher Lisa Allen and pitcher Brianne McGowan in the fourth inning and McGowan allowed just one hit through six innings as the Beavers defeated the No. 2 California softball team, 2-0, on Friday at Levine-Fricke Field.
Cal's lone scoring chance came in the seventh, as shortstop Chelsea Spencer singled to lead off the inning, advanced to second on Jessica Pamanian's fielder's choice and moved to third on a base hit by left fielder Emily Friedman. However, with freshman Erika Racklin pinch running for Friedman, McGowan (32-5) struck out first baseman Julie Meyer on a 3-2 pitch to end the game.
Prior to a seventh, a two-out double by Meyer in the second accounted for Cal's only baserunner of the afternoon.
Bears' starter Kelly Anderson (22-6), who struck out seven Beavers, allowed just one baserunner through the first three innings. Shortstop Mia Longfellow singled to lead off the OSU fourth before being doubled in by Allen. McGowan then belted another double for the 2-0 lead.
The loss seriously threatened Cal's Pac-10 championship hopes. The Bears (42-10 overall, 9-7 Pac-10), who host No. 25 Oregon on Saturday at 1 p.m., slipped three games behind conference-leader OSU (39-10, 12-4) in the standings.
