No. 9 California lost a hard-fought road battle to No. 15 BYU, 1-0, Friday evening at South Stadium. The Golden Bears dropped to 6-2-1, while the Cougars improved to 9-0 in front of a school-record crowd of 3,810 fans.
BYU's Natalie Nate tallied the game-winning goal in the 78th minute on a penalty kick. The goal was Nate's second of the season.
The Cougars held a 9-7 shot advantage over the Bears after Cal out shot BYU, 4-3, in the first half. Senior midfielder Sierra Schlesinger and junior forward Katie Ratican led Cal with two shots each. Nate paced BYU, which averaged 2.61 goals per game entering tonight's contest, with four shots.
Senior goalkeeper Ashley Sulprizio recorded one save for the Bears, while Erika Woodbury secured two saves for the Cougars. This marks only the second time this season that Cal has been shut out.
Cal looks to snap a two-game losing streak at Utah Sunday, Sept. 25 at 1 p.m. MT in Salt Lake City.
