BERKELEY - Senior defender Steve Purdy hit a free kick in the 85th minute to give 14th-ranked California a 1-0 Pac-10 victory over Oregon State on Friday afternoon at Edwards Stadium. The Golden Bears, who are on a three-game winning streak, improved their record to 9-3-1 (4-1-0 Pac-10), while the Beavers fell to 5-8-1 (0-6-0).

When the Bears met the Beavers last Friday in Corvallis, Ore., Cal scored its first goal in the second minute and won 5-0. This time, Cal produced few good scoring chances in the first half, when it outshot Oregon State, 4-3.

One of those shots came on an 11th -minute corner kick that ended up with Cal junior defender Luke Sassano, who shot from 15 yards, but OSU goalkeeper Packy Deenihan made one of his game-high six saves.

A minute later, Cal junior goalkeeper Justin Myers returned the favor, as Beavers forward Robbie Findley got a head on a long pass, only to see Myers make a nice save.

Cal had a good chance in the 58th minute, when junior defender Jeff Serafini volleyed a shot just over the OSU goal. In the 67th minute, Purdy fired a header from close range that Deenihan pushed over his crossbar for a Cal corner kick.

With overtime looming, Cal earned a free kick after an OSU foul about 30 yards from the Beavers' goal in the 85th minute. Purdy fired a rocket past Deenihan for the winner.

Oregon State had a chance with 58 seconds remaining as defender Josh Cameron took a free kick from the midfield stripe. The sophomore launched a blast towards the Cal box, but Myers caught the ball before any Beavers could reach it.

Cal hosts another conference opponent, Washington, at 2:30 p.m. on Sunday at Edwards Stadium. The Bears, who beat the Huskies, 2-0, last Sunday in Seattle, close their regular-season homestand next week, when they host Pac-10 rival Stanford at 3:30 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 20, in Berkeley.
