BERKELEY, Calif. - Freshman defender Brianna Bak scored her first goal of the season in the 89th minute to propel California to a 1-0 victory over No. 11 Stanford Sunday afternoon at Edwards Stadium. The Golden Bears improved to 11-4-5 (3-3-3 Pac-10) with their fourth consecutive shutout, while the Cardinal fell to 13-6-1 (6-2-1 Pac-10).

"I thought we played very well in the first half and dominated the game," said Cal head coach Kevin Boyd. "The second half I would give a little bit of the edge to Stanford. I thought they worked a little harder than we did, which I wasn't happy about. For us to get a goal like that at the end shows a lot of determination and courage. With all of the hard knocks we've had this season, it is nice at the end of the year to get a little karma coming back to you and a little luck."

Cal's game-winning goal started off a free kick by senior defender Alivia Mazura. Stanford attempted to clear the free kick, but Cal freshman forward Lisa Kevorkian headed the ball off the cross bar, and Bak followed up Kevorkian's shot with a header that found the back of the net.

Four players notched two shots each to help Cal hold a 13-6 shot advantage. In the first half, the Bears posted seven shots and held the Cardinal to just two attempts.

Stanford goalkeeper Erica Holland made some big plays in the first half to keep the game scoreless. In the 19th minute, she thwarted Kevorkian's one-v-one opportunity with a diving play to her right.

With 8:10 left until halftime, junior defender Carolina Lea rifled a long shot on goal, and Holland made a diving acrobatic save. Sophomore Valerie Barnes tallied another shot on goal right after Lea's chance.

In the 72nd minute, Key made a game-saving play on a shot by Stanford's Ali Riley.

Prior to the game, Cal recognized its seven seniors - Nadia Al-Lami, Key, Alivia Mazura, Katie Ratican, Julia Schnugg, Jenny Wendell and Bri Wiles.

The 64-team NCAA Tournament field will be announced Monday, Nov. 6, between noon-1 p.m. PT on ESPNEWS.
