The sixth-ranked California women's tennis team dropped just its second match of the season to fourth-ranked USC, 4-3, Saturday afternoon at Marks Stadium in Los Angeles. The Bears fall to 6-2 for the season, while the Trojans stay undefeated at 5-0.
Although Cal dropped the doubles point, Zsuzsanna Fodor and Claire Ilcinkas recorded one victory for the Bears in the No. 2 doubles position. The duo defeated Dianne Matias and Carine Vermeulen, 9-8. Fodor and Ilcinkas improve to 7-1 on the doubles court this season.
In singles action, Cal tallied three victories. 19th-ranked Fodor came up with a big win in the No. 1 spot, outlasting Lindsey Nelson, 6-3, 6-3. Cristina Visico, who is currently ranked No. 92, defeated Carine Vermeulen, 0-6, 6-2, 6-2, while playing No. 5 singles. Bojana Bobusic also grabbed a victory for the Bears, outlasting Judy DeVera, 6-2, 2-6, 6-3. Cal dropped three other singles matches in the No. 2, 3, and 4 positions.
Cal will face No. 17 UCLA, Sunday, as a continuation of their Friday match that was postponed due to rain. The Bears will resume play with the Bruins leading 1-0 after winning the doubles point. Action will begin at 11a.m. at the Los Angels Tennis Center.
