The ninth-ranked California women's tennis team swept its second-consecutive opponent Saturday afternoon, after defeating Washington State, 7-0. The Bears improve to 2-0 in the Pac-10, 8-3 overall, while the Cougars fall to 0-2 in the Pac-10, 4-5 overall.
Cal started off the competition strong after clinching the doubles point, defeating all three of its opponents. Freshman Bojana Bobusic teamed up with junior Suzi Fodor in the No. 1 doubles position to defeat Maria Ring and Amy Toth, 8-2. Playing in the No. 2 doubles spot, Claire Ilcinkas and Marion Ravelojaona outlasted Ekaterina Burduli and Aleksandra Cekic, 8-5. Finally, Stephanie Kusano and Cristina Visico teamed up to record a victory over Aleksandra Stefanova and Marjolein van de Ven, 8-6, playing No. 3 doubles.
On the singles court, No. 3 Suzi Fodor tallied a victory over Ekaterina Burduli, 7-6, 6-1, playing No. 1 singles. Teammate Suzi Babos, who currently holds a No. 25 ranking, outlasted Amy Toth, 6-3, 6-1, in the No. 2 spot. Playing No. 3 singles, 70th-ranked Visico defeated van de Ven, 6-4, 6-1. Ilcinkas recorded a victory for the Bears after defeating Cekic in three sets, 7-5, 1-6, 7-5. Senior captain Jessica Shu outlasted Stefanova, 6-3, 6-1, while Bobusic defeated Bianca Selaru, 6-1, 6-1.
As a team, the Bears are 65-20 in singles play and 25-17 on the doubles court. Cal has swept three out of 11 of its opponents this season.
The Bears return home next weekend to host Arizona, Friday, March 3 at 1:30 p.m. and Arizona State, Saturday, March 4 at noon. All matches will be played at Hellman Tennis Center.
