Junior Laura Cavallo led California with three goals and one assist in the Golden Bears' 17-7 loss to 17th-ranked James Madison on Sunday afternoon at the JMU Lacrosse Complex. Cal's record fell to 4-5, while the Dukes improved to 5-2 on the season and 2-0 in the all-time series against the Bears.
Junior attacker Liz Reifsnyder also scored two goals and one assist for the Bears. James Madison senior attacker Brooke McKenzie led all scorers with seven points (4 goals, 3 assists). Junior midfielder Kelly Berger also scored four goals along with one assist and junior midfielder Lynlea Cronin scored four goals for the Dukes.
James Madison had the edge in three major categories: shots (38-21), ground balls (34-21) and draw controls (14-12). Cal had 10 more turnovers (21-11).
The Bears scored first, with Cavallo's first goal, just 35 seconds into the game. But JMU reeled off the game's next five goals to take a 5-1 lead. Cavallo scored her second in the 16th minute to break the Dukes run and start a 3-0 run for Cal. That run included goals by Reifsnyder and sophomore midfielder Danni Zuralow.
After McKenzie and Cal freshman midfielder Madeleine Dale exchanged goals, to give JMU a 6-5 lead, the Dukes outscored the Bears, 3-1, the rest of the first half to take a 9-6 lead into the break.
James Madison went on a 7-0 run to start the second half, and an 8-0 run overall, which left the Dukes with a commanding 16-6 lead over the Bears. Cal's only goal of the second half was Cavallo's third, assisted by Reifsnyder, in the 48th minute. Sophomore midfielder Julie Stone scored 18 seconds after that to give JMU the 17-7 victory.
The Bears next play George Washington at 3:30 p.m. ET on Wednesday in Washington, D.C.
