BERKELEY -- The No. 5 California softball team tallied a six-run, six-hit fourth inning enroute to the Golden Bears' 8-0 win over No. 6/7 Stanford at Levine-Fricke Field, Friday. Cal improves to 36-4 overall and 5-1 in the Pac-10, while the Cardinal fall to 29-8, 3-4. Senior Kristina Thorson (26-3) threw six scoreless innings for the Bears, giving up three hits and striking out seven. Cal tallied eight runs on 11 hits, Friday.
The teams face off again Saturday in a doubleheader in Palo Alto starting at 1 p.m. The first game will be broadcast live on Comcast SportsNet.
Seniors Lindsay James, Haley Woods and Emily Friedman led off the fourth inning with back-to-back-to-back singles. When junior Alex Sutton reached base on a fielder's choice, James was thrown out at home. Sophomore Katie Vickers walked, sending Woods home for the Bears' first run of the game. Freshman Carly Winger followed with a single, scoring Friedman and Sutton. Sutton advanced home after a Stanford throwing error, bringing the score to 3-0.
Vickers scored after sophomore Julie Meyer reached base on a fielder's choice. Freshman Gina Leomiti hit a sacrifice fly to right field, sending Winger home. Freshman Morgan Siegel singled to center field, scoring Meyer and giving the Bears a 6-0 lead at the end of the inning.
Cal put up one run in each of the fifth and sixth innings. In the fifth, sophomore Jessica Moore came home on a sacrifice fly by Winger. Moore was pinch running for Friedman, who had reached base on a single.
The Bears capped their scoring in the sixth when Siegel hit an RBI single to center field, sending Meyer home. Meyer led off the inning with a single.
