California dropped the first game of its latest road trip, 12-9, in a non-conference match-up at Connecticut on Friday evening. Golden Bears junior midfielder Laura Cavallo scored a game-high five points (4 goals, 1 assist), as did junior teammate Liz Reifsnyder (3 goals, 2 assists) and UConn's Shannon Burke (3 goals, 2 assists), as Cal's record fell to 5-8. The Huskies improved to 4-8.
Cavallo also snared a game-high five draw controls, who gave up four goals to Janet Williams in UConn's win.
The Huskies took a 2-0 lead on goals by Kristin Link and Williams before Cal sophomore defender Mary Downs and Reifsnyder scored to tie the game at 2-2.
UConn went on a 7-2 run, with Cavallo scoring Cal's two goals, to take a 9-4 halftime lead.
The Bears opened the second half with a 5-1 run to get within one goal of the Huskies, who had a 10-9 lead. Reifsnyder and Cavallo each scored twice during that run, which Cal freshman Madeleine Dale capped with her lone goal of the game.
But Burke scored the game's final two goals - at 42:17 and 59:44 - and the Huskies won, 12-9.
Cal concludes its Connecticut road trip when it takes on Yale in New Haven at 12 p.m. ET on Sunday.
