EUGENE, Ore. - California fell to rival and 16th-ranked Stanford, 17-6, on Saturday in the semifinal round of the MPSF Championship at the University of Oregon's Papé Field. The Golden Bears, whose record dropped to 8-10, will play host and fourth-seeded Oregon in the MPSF third-place game at 11 a.m. on Sunday.
The Cardinal (11-5) will try to defend its 2005 MPSF Championship crown against top-seeded Denver, which beat the host Ducks, 14-6, earlier on Saturday, in the conference tournament final at 1 p.m. on Sunday.
Four players led the Bears with two points each: Sophomore midfielder Danni Zuralow (2 goals), senior midfielder Leanne Zilioli (2 goals), junior midfielder Laura Cavallo (1 goal, 1 assist) and junior midfielder Liz Reifsnyder (2 assists).
Daphne Patterson scored a game-high seven points (5 goals, 2 assists) and Megan Burker scored five points (4, 1) to lead the Cardinal against the Bears, who had beaten Stanford, 9-6, in their Feb. 18 season opener.
This time, Cal held four leads against Stanford in the first half, including at 1-0, as Zilioli scored off a free-position shot just 43 seconds into the game. After Stanford tied the game at 1-1, Bears sophomore defender Mary Downs gave Cal a 2-1 lead with her third goal of the season at 5:27.
Cavallo gave Cal a lead of 3-2 at 9:52, scoring off a free-position shot. Zuralow, set up by Reifsnyder, scored at 17:04 to give Cal a 4-3 lead, which was the Bears' last lead of the game.
Stanford scored the last two goals of the half to take a 7-5 lead at the break.
The Cardinal scored the first two goals of the second half to take a 9-5 lead at 35:40. Zilioli, off another Reifsnyder assist, scored Cal's first and last goal of the second half at 38:40 to make the score 9-6.
Stanford then ran off the final eight goals of the game, giving the Cardinal a 10-1 second-half and a 17-6 victory over the Bears.
Cal moves on to play the Ducks (9-9), which lost to the Bears, 12-4, on April 30 during the regular season also in Eugene.
